How to Apply for
American University-Ritsumeikan University Joint Degree Program(JDP)

Below is a summary of the application information. For full details please read the Application Handbook carefully. All the information you need to complete the application is written in the Handbook.

Applicants for JD Program must submit application through Common Application(hereafter referred to as Common App) in addition to "Ritsu-Mate".

The Common App is an online college application that is accepted at around 700 colleges and universities in the United States, including American University. As students under JD Program will be enrolled both in American University and Ritsumeikan University, the applicants must also apply through the Common App during the application period.

Please note that all information you submit through the Common App is managed by American University and will not be passed to Ritsumeikan University. The Common App will not affect the selection process of Ritsumekan admissions.

Certification of Finances for International Students(CFIS)
Students who begin their studies at Ritsumeikan University(RU Home Students) will need to be able to submit CFIS in order to meet visa requirements to enter the United States and enroll American University(AU).
As of the 2017-2018 AU academic year, the amount they must be able to certify is 62,189USD. This amount is subject to increase each year based on the associated costs(such as tuition, mandatory fees, cost of living, etc.).

Applicants must consider this JD Program as their first preference and MUST fulfill ALL of the following requirements.

1. Nationality Eligibility

Applicants must possess non-Japanese nationality.*

*Applicants who possess only Japanese nationality can apply if, by the time of enrollment, they have graduated or are to graduate from high schools/ senior secondary schools located abroad.

*Applicants who possess only Japanese nationality who have graduated / are to graduate from Japanese high schools can take a different entrance examination for this program. Refer to the website from here.

2. Academic Eligibility

Applicants must fulfill ONE of the following requirements.

  1. Applicants must have completed, before the enrollment date at Ritsumeikan University, a standard 12-year course curriculum, or an equivalent curriculum as designated by the Minister of MEXT.
  2. Applicants must have reached 18 years of age before the enrollment date at Ritsumeikan University, for those who fall into following categories:

  3. a. Possess International Baccalaureate Diploma, Abitur, or Baccalaureate
    b. Complete a 12-year curriculum at a school for international students (accredited by WASC, CIS, ACSI, MEXT etc.)
    c. Pass High School Equivalency Exam

3. English Proficiency Eligibility

Applicants must be able to demonstrate sufficient English ability to understand lectures in English.

In order to demonstrate sufficient English ability, applicants must take one of the tests listed below and achieve a score of at least the minimum score indicated below by the time of application.

*The English tests must have been taken within the two-year period prior to the start date of the application period that the applicant applies for and the test score must be available during the application period.

*The university does not accept institutional tests such as TOEFL ITP®Test

*English proficiency score(TOEFL or IELTS) is not required of non-native English speaking applicants if they meet specified eligibilities. Refer to the Application Handbook for more details.

Applicants must submit the completed application forms and necessary supporting documents. Certain documents must be submitted online (via "Ritsu-Mate") while other documents must be submitted by post.

Application Fee

The University will not accept an application, unless we are able to confirm receipt of the Application Fee by the designated application deadline.

The Application fee is 5,000 Yen.

Please pay the application fee by bank transfer in Japanese yen from a financial institution or via "Ritsu-Mate" by credit card, convenience store (only in Japan), PayPal, or Alipay.

How to make payment


When making a payment by credit card, convenience store(only in Japan), Paypal, or Alipay, an additional 500 yen is charged, therefore, the total transaction amount is 5,500 yen.
To make a transaction, visit the Ritsu-Mate and follow the instructions.

You must submit a photocopy of the receipt, along with other application documents, if you make a payment at convenience store.

Submitting Application Documents

Screening Process

The decision on an application will be made on the basis of a screening of the application documents and the applicant's performance at the interview.


Details of the interview, such as the interview method, venue, date, and time, will be determined by the University and notified in an interview information sheet to the applicant appoximately two weeks before the interview date. Applicants cannot choose the interview method, venue, date or time.

  1. Interviews for applicants living outside Japan

    As a rule, the interview will be a web-based interview via SKYPE or the telephone.
    Applicants who are living outside Japan do not need to come to Japan for the interview.

  2. Interviews for applicants living in Japan

    As a rule, the interview will be a face-to-face interview at the Kinugasa Campus of Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.

Notification of Results

Applicants will be notified of their results in following three methods. The University will not provide any information regarding the results by phone, fax, or e-mail.

    2. Application numbers (*) of applicants who are accepted into the University or invited to the 2nd screening interview will be available on the University’s English website from 10:00 AM (JST) on the result notification dates for one week.
    3. Ritsu-Mate [for final result only]
    4. The result of the applicant can be confirmed from the “Examination Result” button on “Ritsu-Mate” from 10:00 AM (JST) on the result notification date for one week.
    5. Postal Mail
    6. The University notifies the results to the successful applicants by registered mail to addresses in Japan, or by courier to addresses outside Japan. It may take a few days to reach applicants. Contact the International Admissions Office if you do not receive the result within 7 days. The University will not send out the results to the applicants who were not accepted into the university.

Once you have completed your application and are admitted to RU, you must take these steps.
