It is important for students who study culture that they have as many opportunities as possible to be exposed in-depth to the practical realities of that culture and creatively combine various research methods. At the College of Global Liberal Arts, not only do students study in a multicultural environment across our two campuses in Japan and Australia, but we have also assembled numerous courses in which students comprehensively study Japanese culture and history, and courses in which students carry out fieldwork. By studying an interdisciplinary curriculum that includes not just the humanities and social sciences but also courses that will improve technological literacy, students will be able to acquire the fundamental research abilities and broad perspectives that are necessary for pursuing graduate-level research.

Graduates of GLA can acquire two degrees – one from Ritsumeikan University and another from ANU. These will open doors to leading graduate schools both in Japan and overseas. The compulsory courses in both the 1st and 2nd years of study are vital for students to gain a foundation in the research skills necessary to progress into any field. When taking these courses, it is important that they do so systematically, with consideration for the specialty field they wish to pursue. The GLA’s Academic Support System assists students in planning their curriculum. It also provides support for those going on to graduate schools, primarily for research seminar leads.
