April 6, 2020
Ritsumeikan University

On Saturday, April 4, one of our students tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
The facts we have uncovered and our response going forward are outlined below.

1. Information about the student
Age: 20s Affiliation: Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (BKC)
* To protect the human rights and personal information of the infected student and his/her family, this is all the information we can provide at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

2. Student activity history
Thursday, March 26, 2020: Returned to his/her family home (outside of the prefecture)
Tuesday, March 31, 2020: Noticed a loss of the senses of taste and smell
Saturday, April 4, 2020: Tested positive for COVID-19; was hospitalized at a government-designated medical institution

3. Our response going forward
To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Ritsumeikan has already established the Ritsumeikan Trust Crisis Response Task Force and the Ritsumeikan University Infectious Disease Countermeasure Committee to deliberate and decide our response. First and foremost, we are hoping for a speedy recovery for the student in question.
We have been alerting students, faculty, and staff via the university homepage and Twitter, and we have defined measures to be taken if there is a suspected case of the novel coronavirus.
To prevent the spread of infection going forward, we will step up our awareness-raising efforts, and we ask everyone to avoid the “Three Cs” (closed spaces, crowded places, close-contact settings), wash your hands regularly, adhere to cough etiquette, and take other actions required to ensure you do not get infected and do not infect others.
