From Global IT Education to Real-World Innovation: A Career at LY Corporation

Yuto Tomita

LY Corporation / iOS Application Engineer

Currently, I’m working at LY Corporation which mainly develops and manages the comprehensive internet service “Yahoo! JAPAN” and the communication application “LINE”. This company develops plenty of services that make our daily life more convenient and fun, for instance, a service to help with administrative procedures, news applications, a car navigation application, a donation service, and so on. Specifically, I'm working as an iOS engineer and developing "Yahoo! JAPAN weather and emergency alert".

When I was in high school, I started to get interested in IT and would love to use English after graduating high school since I was in a global science course in high school. At that time, ISSE was the only university that allowed Japanese students and learn IT all in English with international students. This is why I decided to go to ISSE. At ISSE, I got a lot of precious experiences. Since ISSE is not focused on one specific topic such as AI, robotics, and media, I was able to find what I'm interested in and what I want to do in the future. In addition, ISSE has a class that introduces what we can do in the labs in a couple of weeks per lab for first-year students. In that class, there was a lab developing iOS applications as an output of their research, and this session made me interested in mobile application development. After taking this class, I learned about it more and decided to work at an IT company that develops mobile applications like LY Corporation. I’m able to work smoothly and get a lot of experience such as participating in conferences in my company by making use of my experience in ISSE. Since I studied computer science in English at ISSE, I'm able to talk and discuss IT in English. This experience gives me opportunities to participate in international conferences as an engineer from my company and helps a lot to understand their presentations and discussions at conferences.

In ISSE, there is a PBL class that teaches us how to develop services from scratch with a small team. This development method is similar to methods in companies, and I think it is one of the biggest strengths of ISSE. In addition, ISSE has students from many countries including Japan. In my company, there are many people with different backgrounds such as nationality. Since ISSE has students from many varieties of countries, this experience made me understand them more and made it easier to communicate with my colleagues.

ISSE provides a lot of precious experiences that are not available in other departments and universities. I'm sure these experiences should become your precious memories and help you a lot in your future life such as your future work. If you want to be active globally as an engineer or IT researcher, I'm sure ISSE is one of the best choices.
