Learning How to Help Solve My Country's Problems Using Information Technology by Studying in ISSE Program

Annisa Dea RACHMANTYA (Master’s Program)

Indonesia / e-Society Lab

I chose to enroll in the ISSE course as it is one of the few information technology courses in Japan that provides classes in English. I have always wanted to study in Japan, but I do not want to do it in Japanese since the Japanese language is very hard. I'm glad that I enrolled in ISSE as the course have teachers and students from various countries, meaning that I can learn and receive guidance on how to work in projects with international team members. I also get to have friends from different countries and learn about each other's cultures. I usually go out with my friends to shop and have picnics. We can also discuss on how information science could be used to solve issues that exist in our countries.

My graduation research focuses on working with Indonesian Twitter (now X) data to help companies improve customer's satisfaction. I chose to do this topic as Twitter (now X) is a commonly used social media by Indonesian to express their thoughts. The resulting system can also be used by government to map out areas in Indonesia where citizens are dissatisfied, and where the government should improve the area's facility or services. I was also able to present this topic in international conference and publish the result of my research.

Prospective students do not have to worry much about studying in Japan since Ritsumeikan University provides assistance for international students by having English support in offices and other places such as the cafeteria. Japan is also a safe country, allowing my parents to send me off without much worry. In the future, I wish to go back to work in Indonesia as a consultant, making projects to help companies and governments using the knowledge I earned from studying in ISSE.
