ISSE: A Glimpse into the course and Student Life in Japan

Neti ROHINIESH (Undergraduate)

India / Intelligent Robotic Systems Lab

Hey! I’m Rohin.
I’ve been interested in electronics since I was a kid. I used to play around with the insides of the computer, the TV and the like. It ended up as a deep interest in robots. I wanted a place where I could do robotics, not just learn about them. My search brought me to Japan, which has all types of interesting robots and advanced robotics research, and Ritsumeikan, with its well-equipped robotics laboratory and numerous publications.

During the beginning of the course, because of the pandemic, we got to do a lot on the software side of things. The classes were all interesting and put the mind to work, especially the logical thinking skills. Fortunately, we were even permitted to go to the laboratories in person a few times a week. I came to Ritsumeikan because of its well-established Robotics Laboratory, but the quality of the entire course was far higher than my initial expectations. The project-based learning not only taught us about project management and development lifecycles, but also about working in a team and dividing work. This is invaluable knowledge about how to work in a real-life setting. The theoretical classes are of a high level and the professors are always happy to help you discover what lies beyond the syllabus.

Living as a student in Japan is fantastic! There is so much fun stuff to do, so many beautiful places to see, and so many interesting people to meet! The dorm is amazing, with all kinds of people from around the world and from different majors, and it has pretty fun events every month too. Activities like Karaoke, or spending the night at an arcade are things I've never done before. I’ve met people from all over the world! Despite being in Japan, I’ve met people from every continent in this course (except Antarctica, obviously).

My advice: take it easy. The course is high-quality, not high quantity. You will find yourself with quite a bit of free time. Use it well! Have fun, join a club, eat food, find a part-time job, take a trip, the possibilities are endless!
