When your career aligns with your passions, you can try to go beyond the functional side of technology
CARRANZA ROGERIO Brenda (Doctoral Program)
Mexico / Affective Engineering and Computer Arts Lab
I had my first experience at the ISSE course as a JICA trainee. Although due to the pandemic it had to be online, the laboratory members made me feel part of the group from the beginning.
When applying for the lab, I realized that ISSE was unique. Going beyond the functional side of technology, the course aims at providing an organic view of its development. Particularly in my case, doing research from an Affective Engineering perspective has allowed me to link my passion for STEM Education and Arts with Information Science and Engineering.
Because the program is English-based, the opportunities to interact with international students are frequent. These chances increase if you decide to live in the University's dormitory. For me, living in BKC iHouse allowed me to learn about countries we rarely know in the other side of the world. Many cultures, traditions, and perspectives merge in a joyful but meaningful way.
Finally, as a recommendation for prospective students, I suggest to consider these three points:
- 1. Choose a program/laboratory aligned with your passions.
This will allow you to stay motivated even during the toughest parts of your research. - 2. Begin learning Japanese today.
Even if it is just on a basic level, you will find it easier to connect with the local community and to appreciate Japanese culture. - 3. Believe in yourself.
It might sound as a set phrase, but I think sometimes we forget how capable we are. Don't overthink it, and just try your best!
