My Educational Journey at Ritsumeikan University: How the ISSE Course and Community Supported Me in Overcoming Challenges

I still remember the day my father bought me my first computer when I was 9 years old. I spent a lot of time playing video games and exploring it. Then, I began to develop an interest in more sophisticated tasks, such as creating harmless viruses that automatically shut down your computer and changing the content of a website through inspect element. Although these may not sound complicated, they played a major role in cultivating my interest in information technology.
The Information Systems Science and Engineering (ISSE) course appealed to me the most because of its programming lessons and project-based approach to learning that it offers. The curriculum includes plenty of hands-on projects and real-life applications through computers, setting it apart from other computer science courses. Moreover, I have always had a deep fascination for technological innovation and creative solutions. I believe the Japanese approach towards societal problems epitomizes these concepts. This reason by itself strongly influenced my decision to study in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Coming to Japan during the pandemic posed numerous challenges. Travel restrictions were imposed on the day after my arrival, and physical interactions were heavily restricted. This setback hindered my learning progress significantly. I had no prior programming experience before entering the ISSE program. However, through the supportive learning environment provided by the ISSE community, I became more confident in my programming skills, analytical abilities, and public speaking. Furthermore, I was blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people who were willing to assist me in my quest for knowledge. This motivated me to grow, both as a student and an individual.
If I could turn back time and offer some advice to my former self before entering university, I would encourage being more proactive and avoid hesitation in asking questions or seeking guidance. Embracing this mindset not only enhances academic growth but also opens doors to meaningful connections. There are valuable lessons to be learned from mentors who are more than willing to impart their knowledge.
