Why did you choose Ritsumeikan MOT for pursuing your Ph.D.?

I obtained my master's degree in Management Science and Engineering from Dalian Maritime University. Working and collaborating with Japanese classmates in my team sparked my curiosity and desire to experience Japanese culture, which led me to aspire to study in Japan. After graduation, I have been committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in this field. Ritsumeikan MOT offers a program that aligns perfectly with my research interests, which is why I applied to this program.

Tell us about your research project.

My research focuses on the success factors of innovation in Hidden Champions (HCs): A comparative study of Japan and Germany. In 2024, Germany overtook Japan in nominal GDP, sparking significant discussions in economic and political circles. Germany achieved this with about two-thirds of Japan's population and number of companies. During this process, it has been noted that HCs played a crucial central role in economic development. Through this study and the opportunities available to me, I aim to investigate the conceptual model of HCs‘ innovation process and explore new characteristics of HCs. This study employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), using SmartPLS 4.0, as it is well-suited for analyzing composite variables, potential second-order composites, and small sample sizes within the proposed model.
The research results also reveal differences in the new product development processes of HCs in Germany and Japan.
