Activities

The Japan Biochar Consortium engages in various activities to support the promotion of biochar projects for its members. By bringing together private companies, local governments, and researchers, we aim to advance the research, societal implementation, and dissemination of biochar through collaboration.

Promoting social implementation of biochar

  • Participation in carbon credit systems such as J-Credit and activities to validate effectiveness within them
  • Encouragement on organizing a platform and business ecosystem of biochar through finding and strengthening relevant partners
  • Development, operation and maintenance of a storage database of biochar to accumulate storage data and release (guarantee) generated credits
  • Promotion of research projects and exchange between members

Research on the evaluation of the functions and effects of biochar

  • Certification of biochar quality
  • Extension and comparative evaluation of biochar quality standards
  • Evaluation of the soil improvement potential of biochar and assessment of application methods
  • Development of LCA methods for biochar and case studies

Member-based study groups

The Japan Biochar Consortium forms member-based study groups by selecting themes according to both domestic and international trends in biochar and the needs of its members. We hold member-based study groups as needed, and members can participate in workshops organized by any study group. Additionally, if there is a request from members and certain conditions are met, new study groups can be formed.

You can check the list of currently available member-based study groups through the following link. Details of their activities are available on the members-only site.

Workshops, seminars and symposiums

In addition to member-exclusive research meetings, we organize the annual symposium on biochar as " Japan Biochar Research Center & Japan Biochar Consortium of Ritsumeikan University," as well as workshops and seminars held in small groups. We also conduct "Online Consultation Sessions" where individuals can casually discuss matters related to biochar. These events include sessions exclusive to consortium members as well as those open to the general public.

Establishment, maintenance and operation of information systems

To facilitate the social implementation of biochar through the formation of a platform and business ecosystem, we undertake activities such as developing, maintaining, and operating a biochar sequestration database to accumulate data on sequestration. This includes the public release (assurance) of generated credits. Additionally, we contribute to the traceability of carbon sequestration through biochar.
