Unstoppable technological progress, unprecedented crises caused by conflicts, natural disasters and infectious diseases, harnessing the SDGs to realize a society that “does not leave anyone behind,” increased called for the promotion of the diversity and inclusion. One initiative that aims to confront this era of unpredictable change is Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, whose primary theme is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The Expo aims to become a testing ground that will give the world hope for a future society by way of new connections and creations born from the intersection of diverse values from around the world.

The Ritsumeikan Academy is actively participating in Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, and we are developing activities to create a future society where people can shine brilliantly together. This is precisely because the scope of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan overlaps significantly with the ideal future of society and education envisioned by Ritsumeikan.

Based on the R2030 Academy Vision that looks out to the year 2030, Ritsumeikan is tackling a wide range of challenges to break through the limitations of the past in order develop closer connections with society and create value that can be shared with the world.

The “Brilliance of Life” thematic project is one of the symbols of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Eight Signature Pavilions, each produced by a leading Japanese expert, will be erected to deepen the discussion on what the "brilliance of life" means from the viewpoint of the expert’s respective philosophies. The outcomes of this project will be preserved for prosperity.

Ritsumeikan is co-sponsoring the Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion, the signature pavilion produced by Sachiko Nakajima and the only project focused on the theme of education. Ms. Nakajima, a true all-rounder, is a jazz pianist, a mathematics researcher, and a STEAM educator. There are high expectations for her unparalleled imagination driven by her diverse experience and flexible thinking. Together with Ms. Nakajima and other participating companies and organizations, Ritsumeikan is promoting three initiatives: the Research Advancement Project, the Future Education Project, and the Student Activity Activation Project.

Sachiko Nakajima

Sachiko Nakajima is a jazz pianist, a mathematics researcher, a STEAM educator, and a media artist who is involved in a wide array of activities both in Japan and overseas. She is also the CEO of steAM Inc. and a Director at STEAM Sports Laboratory, Inc. The only Japanese female gold medalist in the International Mathematical Olympiad, Ms. Nakajima is also a researcher for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Classroom of the Future and EdTech Research Group, and a member of the Expert Committee on School Guidance and Support for Students with Outstanding Special Talent in Specific Fields (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).

Promoting the Team Expo 2025 Program

The Team Expo 2025 Program is an initiative that aims to co-create an ideal future society together with various stakeholders, including corporations, educational/academic/research institutions, national government agencies, international organizations, local governments, NGOs, NPOs, and individuals. It is composed of Co-Creation Partners, which are cooperating corporations and organizations, and Co-Creation Challenges, which are initiatives undertaken by individual and group participants.

The Ritsumeikan Academy is registered as a Co-Creation Partner, and we have been implementing a range of events to build momentum for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, including the Ibaraki x Ritsumeikan Day held in May 2022. We are also involved in two Co-Creation Challenges: the Carbon Minus Project, which aims to create environmentally friendly mechanisms for social infrastructure and corporate supply chains, and the EDGE +R Program, an educational program that aims to cultivate innovative human resources.

An Academy-wide effort to leverage project outcomes as a driving force for reform

In July 2022, the Ritsumeikan Academy established the Ritsumeikan Expo Collaboration Promotion Headquarters to create an administrative framework for organic collaboration among the various organizations within the Trust. By working together in an Academy-wide effort, we will build momentum and achieve greater outcomes, which in turn will serve as the driving force behind the reforms aimed at realizing the R2030 Academy Vision.
