Living as a Global Citizen in a World of Uncertainties

Growing up in both China and Japan, along with my diverse international experiences, has shaped my deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world. My undergraduate studies at RU and ANU further heightened my awareness of how global crises impact societies worldwide, reinforcing my commitment to a career in public service. To further develop my expertise and analytical skills, I pursued a graduate program in international relations. The Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) stood out as the premier program in the field, making it my top choice.

At graduate school, I focus on international development, particularly economic development. The courses I took at both RU and ANU, along with my hands-on internship experiences, have significantly strengthened my analytical and research skills. Furthermore, the strong foundation in international relations and public speaking that I built during my undergraduate years has been invaluable to my graduate studies. The four years in the Dual Degree Program have not only deepened my academic expertise but have also equipped me with a multidisciplinary perspective essential for addressing complex global challenges.

Dual Degree Program

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Looking back on my journey of earning two degrees from RU and ANU, I deeply appreciate the unique academic and personal growth opportunities that the Dual Degree Program has provided me with. The program not only allowed me to explore a broad spectrum of disciplines but also helped me discover my passion for international affairs.

During my first and second years at RU, I took a diverse range of courses, ranging from history, political science, economics, to specialized subjects like algorithms. This interdisciplinary foundation honed my analytical thinking and adaptability, encouraging me to explore various academic interests. Later, at ANU, I found myself immersed in a curriculum specifically tailored to international relations, which perfectly aligned with my growing interest in global issues. The coursework at ANU deepened my understanding of international relations and policymaking, ultimately inspiring me to pursue further studies at the graduate level.

The Dual Degree Program has been a major turning point in shaping my academic path, equipping me with the skills and insights necessary for a meaningful career in public service and global policy.

Memories

My Internship Experience in Australia

One of the most transformative experiences during my four years in the Dual Degree Program was my internship at the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA). As a National Office/Research Intern, I had the opportunity to coordinate the 2022 AIIA National Conference, where I directly engaged with policymakers, scholars, and professionals on pressing global issues. This experience sharpened my event management and communication skills as I collaborated with other interns and staff to ensure the even’s success and lasting impact.

In addition to event coordination, I conducted research on China’s policies for attracting overseas talent and contributed to the report “Winning Hearts and Minds: The PRC’s Efforts to Attract Scientific Talent”. This experience strengthened my analytical and research abilities while providing hands-on exposure to policy analysis.

This internship was a defining moment in my academic journey, bridging theory with practice and further fueling my passion for international relations. The practical skills I gained—ranging from critical thinking and research to strategic communication—continue to benefit me in graduate school and beyond.
