Five GLA Students Present Research at International Conference in Nepal

Five Global Liberal Arts students presented research at the 3rd International Conference of St. Xavier’s College (ICSXC 2026), themed “Reimagining the Global Future with Youth at the Crossroads of Change,” held in Kathmandu, Nepal. GLA is one of the co-hosting organizations. The students joined online.

The presentations grew out of a collaboration between GLA and St. Xavier’s College, Maitighar, Nepal, developed through the Spring 2026 Special Lecture course. In this course, GLA and SXC students form joint teams to identify issues in socio-economic development in Nepal, research them from local communities’ perspectives, and formulate policy recommendations. Students who join Professor Hirono on a field study in Nepal - offered as the credit-bearing course Liberal Arts Experience - conduct interviews there to further refine their research proposals and policy recommendations. This year’s field study has been postponed to next year due to flooding in Nepal, but the students successfully presented the research they had developed with their SXC counterparts through the course.

GLA生5名、国際会議で研究発表（ネパール）

グローバル教養学部（GLA）の学生5名が、ネパール・カトマンズで開催された第3回国際会議「ICSXC 2026」（聖ザビエル・カレッジ主催、テーマ：「Reimagining the Global Future with Youth at the Crossroads of Change」）にて研究発表を行いました。GLAは共催団体として参加し、学生はオンラインで発表しました。

今回の発表は、グローバル教養学部と聖ザビエル・カレッジとの協働から生まれたもので、2026年春学期の正課「Special Lecture」の一環として取り組まれた研究プロジェクトに基づくものです。この科目では、GLAとSXCの学生が合同チームを組み、ネパールにおける社会経済開発に関する課題を発見し、地域住民の視点から研究を行い、政策提言としてまとめます。

廣野教授とともにネパールでのフィールド調査（正課科目「リベラル・アーツ・エクスペリアンス」として開講）に参加する学生は、現地でのインタビューを通じて研究提案と政策提言をさらに磨き上げます。今年度のフィールド調査は、ネパールで発生した洪水の影響により来年に延期となりましたが、学生たちは授業を通してSXC生とともに発展させてきた研究を発表しました。

• ネパール固形廃棄物管理法2011がポカラの河川・湖沼に与えた影響（新谷怜子）
• ネパールの「ゴーストビレッジ」再生：持続可能な農村開発への地域主導型アプローチ（Samantha Feriolla Chow）
• エベレスト・ベースキャンプにおける持続可能な衛生管理の実態と重要性（林幸星）
• ナグドゥンガ・トンネル建設遅延が現地住民コミュニティに与えた社会経済的影響（Jungern Kim）
• ネパールの公共交通機関における女性の安全と大学教育へのアクセス（斉藤美弥）
