GLA: A Great Environment for
Cultural and Language Exchange

During high school, I was an active member of my school’s English debate team and enjoyed discussing current topics, exchanging opinions and engaging in discussions. I wanted to learn a new language and challenge myself by living in a country with a culture different from my own.

With a strong interest in broadening my views and meeting people from diverse backgrounds, I thought GLA would be the perfect choice for me. Many of the courses I take emphasize the importance of sharing opinions and experience sharing. In the future, I aspire to work in an international environment, where I can constantly engage with diverse perspectives and ideas.

What am I interested in?

During the course selection period, I prioritized courses with topics that I found the most interesting and engaging. I had enjoyed studying philosophy in high school and was eager to continue exploring it in a different academic setting. At the same time, I was interested in trying out a new field, sociology, to learn how aspects of our everyday lives can be analyzed from different perspectives.

Checking the course syllabi was very useful in understanding the class requirements and what to expect from exams and assessments. I structured my schedule to include many morning classes, which helped me start my days early and stay focused. However, having afternoon classes as well allowed me to study during the day, and efficiently manage my time.

Introduction to Sociology

From Curiosity to Analysis: Transforming My Social Perspective

This course focused on sociological theories and concepts, covering various aspects of society such as religion, race, social movements and social groups. Through the classes, I started questioning my surroundings more and sought to understand them from a new perspective.

One particularly eye-opening assignment involved conducting a social observation in a location of our choice. This experience made me realize how many events occur around us daily and how often we overlook or dismiss them as irrelevant. Developing the curiosity to question why things happen is a fundamental part of being human, and this course has encouraged me to transform this curiosity into a more analytical and precise way of thinking.

Campus Life

Engaging in Extracurricular activities at Ritsumeikan OIC

Outside of class, I am a member of GLA’s student council. During the Fall Semester, we participated in OIC Campus’ School Festival by hosting a booth featuring some games from three different countries: Japan, the USA and Australia. I enjoyed taking part in the event, interacting with visitors and playing games with the kids who stopped by our booth.

I was in charge of the Australian section, where I facilitated an egg race and a matching game with animal cards and their English names. I also love participating in cultural events organized by BBP, where I have had the opportunity to learn more about my friends’ cultures and traditions. Through these events, I have met several new friends from different degree programs at Ritsumeikan.

One of my hobbies outside class is photography. I enjoy taking my camera with me to capture beautiful landscapes and surroundings, especially when traveling or hiking with friends. I believe Japan’s mountains and hiking trails are a must-visit for anyone staying here!

Dormitory Life

Life at OIC Global House as an enriching cultural experience

I live in the OIC Global House and truly enjoy its environment. Living with other GLA students has made it easier to build strong friendships and connections. In addition, spending time outside of class with people from different cultural backgrounds enriches my experience even more.

Through dorm life, I have met many people and learned how to cook dishes from different countries, while also sharing my own traditions and habits, which were often well received by others. Whether studying together or simply spending time in the common areas, these moments have made my college experience even more special.
