Specialization / Research Interests
My research interests lie at the intersection of international politics, international law, and peace studies. My current research focuses on the international political consequences of great powers’ legal justifications for the use of force, particularly in relation to coercive diplomacy; the political dynamics of humanitarian crises and so-called “humanitarian interventions”; and the ideational power of smaller states and non-governmental organizations in shaping international society.
Ritsumeikan University is founded on the ideals of “freedom and innovation,” with “peace and democracy” at the core of its educational philosophy. But what do we really mean by freedom? What counts as innovation? What are the conditions for peace, and how should democracy be understood? In today’s globalized world, these concepts are often interpreted in deeply conflicting ways. At university—especially at GLA—I hope you will cultivate the ability to critically examine the historical, political, and social backgrounds of such conflicts. In a world where wars between states and inhumane violence within societies persist, it is increasingly important to think carefully for yourself and to make conscious choices about your words and actions as a member of the international community. In your future study of the liberal arts, I hope to support you in this intellectual journey. I look forward to meeting you at GLA.
