Laboratory of Cancer Pathobiology and Therapeutics

Elucidating the mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis and developing new therapeutics for the unmet medical needs

Cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide and has remained the leading cause of death in Japan for the past 40 years. Advancements in genetic analysis techniques have revealed the full extent of the diverse genetic abnormalities present in patients with cancer. However, it remains unclear how various genetic abnormalities lead to the development of cancer. Therefore, to find effective therapeutic targets and cure cancer, it is necessary to elucidate the relationship between the cause (genetic abnormalities) and the result (disease phenotypes). In our laboratory, we generate a variety of disease models based on clinical problems, and analyze these models not only at the cellular level but also at the individual level to elucidate the mechanisms of cancer development. From the mechanisms identified through our analysis, we assess their potential as therapeutic targets. Our goal is to develop innovative new drugs and treatments that address unmet medical needs in various types of cancer.
