Researcher Development

The Graduate School of Pharmacy provides support in the following three areas. We have put in place the conditions to ensure graduate students can engage in rewarding research activities on a daily basis, and we provide support that enables students to fully pursue the career path of their choice upon completion.

Facilities and Equipment

Research equipment

The Science Core, which serves as the main building for the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Graduate School of Pharmacy, is fully equipped to enable rewarding research. It includes thesis research rooms, shared facilities (e.g., low temperature room, darkroom, common equipment room), animal laboratory, student laboratory, simulated clinical laboratory (mock pharmacy, mock hospital room), and seminar rooms, and a medicinal plant garden is located next door. Some College of Pharmaceutical Sciences equipment is also located in other facilities (e.g., Biolink and Colearning House 2), and the chemistry, biology, and medical/clinical labs are all fully equipped.

Books and periodicals

Ritsumeikan University is home to the following libraries: the Media Center (Natural Sciences Library) and the Media Library (Social Sciences Library) on the Biwako-Kusatsu Campus; the Hirai Kaichiro Memorial Library, the Shugakukan Research Library, and the Humanities Library on the Kinugasa Campus; the Suzaku Research Library on the Suzaku Campus; and the OIC Library on the Osaka Ibaraki Campus.

Global initiatives

The Major in Pharmaceutical Sciences encourages master’s students to put their research into practice by giving oral and poster presentations at conference and symposia both inside and outside Japan. For this reason, the program includes active learning subjects to provide students with the ability to communicate and give presentations in English (i.e., Advanced English and English Presentation Skills for Engineers). In Advanced English, the lecture-style classes are designed to ensure that students learn about the structure and characteristics of academic papers and the expressions used in presentations. There are also seminar-style classes in which students can practice and improve upon their skills. In English Presentation Skills for Engineers, students learn how to give presentations in English by participating in group work premised on conducting research and participating in internships overseas. This is offered in conjunction with the Graduate School of Science and Engineering as part of the Global-ready Graduate Program (GRGP). Students also learn the writing skills they need to write cover letters and resumes, which they need to prepare for research abroad.

Research support

Ritsumeikan University offers a wide range of scholarships and research subsidies to encourage student research. We also provide tuition reductions and other types of financial aid, and we support research with myriad scholarships and subsidies for specific purposes, like giving presentations at international conferences or participating in research overseas.

Job placement and advancement

We established the Graduate Student Career Path Support Center to effectively integrate career development support for graduate students, and this center helps students clarify their career paths while also helping the graduate school achieve its mission.
The center also tracks the job placement of program graduates and all-but-dissertation (ABD) graduates, helps students apply for Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowships, and offers a range of seminars (on topics including improving research skills, teaching skills, and expertise; improving career development skills; and improving the ability to solve social issues) to help students develop their career paths.
