To date, pharmaceutical education in Japan has evolved as a single educational system that aims to produce two kinds of talent: frontline pharmacists and pharmaceutical researchers who can create new drugs. In recent years, rapid advancements in medicine and the life sciences coupled with progress in medical technology have led to more advanced and diversified medical care. In the field of pharmacy as well, there have been calls for the cultivation of advanced talent, not to mention a growing need for human resources in line with stepped-up research and development on the back of an increasing demand for drug research.
To respond to these needs, Ritsumeikan University opened the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in April 2008 and the Graduate School of Pharmacy Doctoral Program in April 2014, and we have been producing frontline pharmacists ever since.
In April 2020, we opened the Master's Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Graduate School of Pharmacy aimed at cultivating pharmaceutical researchers who can create new drugs. The following year, in April 2021, we established the Doctoral Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. With a primary focus on drugs and building on a foundation of the natural sciences for human health, we aim to cultivate talented individuals who can contribute to society in the field of drug development equipped with a wide range of specialized knowledge and skills for interdisciplinary pharmacy, including the creation and analysis of drugs, environmental factors and the impact of drugs on the body, and drug therapy for diseases.
