Ritsumeikan University Karate Club (Shinsei) member Kenji Mori, a 3rd-year student in the College of Social Sciences, was selected for the national karate team and will represent Japan in the 25th Summer Deaflympics Games in Tokyo (Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics). He received his appointment letter at a ceremony held at the Ajinomoto Training Center (Kita-ku, Tokyo) on Sunday, June 22.

The Deaflympics are an international sports competition for deaf athletes held every four years, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the games. The games will be held over 12 days from Saturday, November 15 to Wednesday, November 26, with approximately 3,000 athletes from 70 to 80 countries and regions competing in 21 events.

The karate competition will be held at the Tokyo Budokan (Adachi-ku, Tokyo) from Sunday, November 23 Tuesday, November 25, with Mori competing in the men's individual kata and men's individual kumite (under 60 kg) divisions. Mori also had an outstanding performance at the World Deaf Karate Championships 2024 held in Malaysia last December, winning two bronze medals for Japan.
Expectations are high for Mori to win a medal on the world stage, so let’s all continue to cheer him on.

Comment from Kenji Mori (3rd year, College of Social Sciences)

I am happy to report that I have been selected to represent Japan in the karate competition at the 25th Summer Deaflympics Games. This is due to everyone who has supported me on a daily basis, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. This year's games are special as they will be held in Japan. I will give my all as I aim to win a gold medal and do my best to repay everyone for their support. I also hope to spread the word about the Deaflympics and the appeal of deaf sports, which are still relatively unknown. I hope you will all continue rooting for me!
