Protein Intake and Muscle Mass:Graduate Student Research Manuscript published in 'Nutrients' Journal
A student in the Graduate School of Sport and Health Science at Ritsumeikan University, Jun Yasuda, has had his research manuscript published in the highly respected monthly journal of human nutrition, ‘Nutrients’.
Carried out in collaboration with the School’s Professor Satoshi Fujita, and Assistant Professor Takuma Arimitsu, the study showed that total protein intake more than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is essential for the regulation of muscle mass in the healthy young population.
Interestingly, among individuals with total protein intake greater than the RDA, achieving a fixed amount of protein intake (0.24 g/kg body weight) at all three meals was associated with higher fat free mass as compared to those who failed to achieve the fixed amount in any one of three meals, suggesting that achieving a fixed amount of protein intake (0.24 g/kg body weight) at all three meals is more effective than total protein intake alone for maintenance of muscle mass.
