Ritsumeikan Plans to Open College of Arts and Design and Graduate School of Science in Arts and Design

Ritsumeikan University aims to establish the tentatively named College of Arts and Design and Graduate School of Science in Arts and Design in April 2026.

The planned enrollment capacities are 180 for the undergraduate college, 20 for the master's program, and five for the doctoral program. Treating design studies as its own discipline and based on the pursuit of new future-oriented design studies and the technology and sensibility of art, we envision the development of education and research that transcends the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences at Kinugasa Campus, which is located in the historical and cultural city of Kyoto. Transcending the borders of Kinugasa Campus, we view the community and society at large as a "learning place." By providing diverse learning opportunities in the world beyond the campus and cooperating with companies and society, we aim to engage in creative expression related to the development of a sustainable society for the future. Furthermore, we plan to introduce a virtual campus that utilizes online, on-demand, and virtual spaces in addition to real-world spaces to create a more flexible and higher-dimensional learning environment suitable for a diverse society.

By way of education and research at the tentatively named College of Arts and Design and Graduate School of Science in Arts and Design, we will instill in our students a creative and flexible mindset that, underpinned by aesthetic sensibilities, comprehensively incorporates problem-solving skills, the ability to reframe questions, co-creation skills, the ability to identify problems, and creative thinking. We aim to cultivate talented individuals who can embody the ideal vision of a future society with cultural and social living patterns imbued with creativity as well as highly specialized professionals and researchers who can harness their aesthetic sensibilities to create a future society where the physical extends into the digital and the two worlds are integrated together.

An Establishment Committee set up within the university is currently working on a faculty organization development plan and has begun recruiting faculty members. The committee is working out the details of this plan on an accelerated pace in preparation for the opening of the new college and graduate school in April 2026.
