Ritsumeikan American University Joint Degree Program

Ritsumeikan University’s College of International Relations' groundbreaking Joint Degree Program with School of International Service, American University has officially begun.

The Joint Degree Program is a unique program offered in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University (RU) and American University (AU). As a joint degree undergraduate program between the US and Japan, it marks somewhat of a watershed as the first of its kind. Both RU and AU will confer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Global International Relations upon completion of the program.

The curriculum is designed for students to learn about Western and non-Western approaches to international studies. RU and AU will cultivate globally minded leaders who are ready and prepared to take up active roles in international fields through this first truly global degree program in International Relations.

Students in the program will be jointly enrolled at both RU and AU and will be known as ‘Sakura Scholars’. The cherry blossom, or "sakura", as well as being an iconic image of Japan, is also synonymous with Washington DC. The US capital, presented with a gift of some 3000+ trees from the city of Tokyo more than 100 years ago, now celebrates the ‘National Cherry Blossom Festival’ on an annual basis.

Sakura Scholars will thus represent a symbol of the lasting friendship and unique learning community between the two countries.

The new English website is now live and provides details about the program - including its 4 year study plan, as well as the latest scholarship information. Follow the link below to find out more.
