Sustainable Urban Policy VIII

This course will discuss the sustainability of housing, community, transportation, land use, infrastructure, urban facilities, heritages, and city planning in general as practical case studies to understand the major trends in sustainable urban development worldwide. The instructor will try to provide knowledge about typical cases for sustainable urban policies in terms of their objectives, effects, and evaluations of the policies in European countries, Japan, and Asian countries. The objectives of this course are to understand the social background suggested by each case of sustainable urban development and to explain the social context of urban policies with specific examples from the viewpoints of sustainability. The contents of this course from the 2nd to the 4th week are the history of urban planning and urban theories in European and Asian cities. From the 5th to the 9th week, you will learn about the modern history of infrastructure developments, housing policies by public initiatives, theories for Suburbia, and infrastructure developments in new towns. From the 10th to 14th week, we will discuss contemporary topics such as the recovery process from disasters in Japan, practices for shrinking cities, and inclusion of minority communities.
