JH. WOW: Science Study in Yakushima Begins

After a two-hour flight from Itami Airport, we arrived at Yakushima. As part of the Junior High School WOW Program, we are visiting Yakushima with 25 junior high school students.

First, we went to the Yakusugi Nature Museum. The curator told us about the history of Yakushima, Yakusugi cedars, and the Jomon cedars we would see tomorrow. Not only did we learn more about the Jomon cedars we will see tomorrow, but we also learned how slowly the Yakusugi cedars have grown over a long period of time in a harsh environment.

Next, we went to [ne-] Plant-based Cafe & Act, run by Mr. Maruyama of Imagine Yakushima, who gave us a preliminary study via ZOOM, to hear his talk. We asked him, "Under what circumstances did Yakushima become a World Heritage site?" Why do people from all over the world visit Yakushima? How do we want Yakushima to be for a world that is comfortable for all? Everyone thought about the many questions posed by Mr. Maruyama. While walking around the area, we were also introduced to various plants and learned how to look at the forest. He also told us what he wanted us to think and feel as we trekked to the Jomon Cedars, so we could prepare our minds and hearts.

Tomorrow, the 25 of us will finally take on the challenge of reaching the Jomon Cedars. We will enjoy everything that happens as we touch and feel the real thing.
