IB Year 1 Students Experience Nishijin Weaving — A Pre-CAS Activity Exploring Kyoto’s Traditional Industries
On Saturday, June 7, Year 1 students in the IB Course participated in a Nishijin weaving workshop at the Nishijin Textile Center in Kyoto. This activity was part of their Pre-CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) program, which prepares students for the full CAS experience beginning in January.
Nishijin weaving is one of Kyoto’s most renowned traditional industries, and the visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of its cultural significance. Students had hands-on experience with traditional looms, observed skilled artisans at work, and engaged in direct conversations with them, gaining firsthand insight into the depth of craftsmanship and the importance of preserving such traditions.
The experience also encouraged students to consider how traditional industries can be sustained and shared from a global perspective. It was a meaningful occasion that not only connected them to local heritage but also expanded their thinking on cultural communication and international relevance.
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is a core component of the IB Diploma Programme. It aims to foster personal growth and social engagement through experiential learning beyond the classroom. Through the three CAS strands, students are encouraged to connect their academic learning with real-life experiences, helping them develop as individuals and as members of a global society.
