[IB Course] Three Days of Challenge and Learning Through Shimanami Kaido Cycling

Twenty-five first- and second-year IB Course students participated in a three-day, two-night experiential learning trip that involved cycling across the Shimanami Kaido. This program, now in its fifth year, is designed to support hands-on implementation of the International Baccalaureate’s “CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)” component.

CAS is a unique element of the IB curriculum that encourages personal growth, social awareness, and a spirit of contribution through three areas beyond academics: creativity, activity, and service. Students are expected to develop initiative, responsibility, and empathy through experiences that cannot be gained solely in the classroom.

A Scenic and Challenging Cycling Experience

This trip involved a physically and mentally demanding journey, cycling nearly 100 kilometers over two days from Imabari in Ehime Prefecture to Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture.

The Shimanami Kaido cycling route is internationally renowned for its breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and its islands. Under clear skies, students rode with awe and excitement as stunning scenery unfolded before them. Along the way, they stopped by local shops to enjoy fresh seafood and seasonal fruits—an enriching opportunity to experience the unique flavors and charm of the region through all five senses.

Growth Through Cooperation and Learning

Despite steep hills and long distances, students supported one another—encouraging each other and staying mindful of their own pace. This spirit of teamwork exemplified the values of Ritsumeikan Uji's IB learners. Through interactions with local residents and immersion in natural surroundings, students deepened their understanding of the region, making this more than just a physical challenge or sightseeing tour.

At Ritsumeikan Uji, the IB Course emphasizes not only academic learning in the classroom but also these kinds of off-campus experiential opportunities. This cycling trip allowed students to push their personal limits, overcome challenges together, and grow mentally and physically. The experience served as a valuable foundation for building motivation and collaboration in their ongoing IB journey.
