[Student Council] Online Exchange with Ritsumeikan Moriyama High School

~Sharing Practices to Promote Student Self-Governance~

On Friday, August 22, the student councils of Ritsumeikan Uji High School and Ritsumeikan Moriyama High School held an online exchange meeting via Zoom. The purpose of this exchange was to deepen mutual understanding of student-led activities such as “rule-making” and to learn from each other’s practices.

A Time to Share Each Other’s Practices

During the exchange, both schools introduced their student council activities and exchanged opinions on the background and ingenuity behind their efforts. Ritsumeikan Moriyama shared various initiatives such as the reasoning behind their school rule reforms, their use of crowdfunding to build a cultural festival stage, and methods to increase student engagement.

As the discussion progressed, many questions were raised about Ritsumeikan Uji’s school festival, "Kofusai," especially regarding the number of stages, the scope of events organized by the student council, and the decision-making process involving students, teachers, and parents. Through these exchanges, both sides experienced a much more interactive and enriching learning session than initially expected.

Voices from Participating Students

Here are some reflections from students on the Ritsumeikan Uji side:

“I was really inspired by the crowdfunding project. I have great respect for students who build the stage with their own hands.”

“It felt like their student governance was at a university level. I was impressed by how they engaged everyone when reforming school rules. I'd like to involve all students from the 'rule-making' stage here at Uji.”

“I realized we should also ask about rules that students think are ‘necessary,’ not just the ones they question. Moriyama’s ideas were very insightful.”

“I admired how Moriyama students created a culture of mutual awareness. There were many ideas we could bring back to Uji.”

Future Outlook

Through the honest sharing of practices and challenges, both student councils gained new perspectives and ideas. Moving forward, the Ritsumeikan Uji High School Student Council will continue to lead initiatives proactively and expand exchanges within and beyond the Ritsumeikan school network.
