IB1 Students Hold “Science Innovation Presentation”

On Monday, September 8, 2025, Ritsumeikan Uji High School’s IB Course Year 1 students held their Science Innovation Presentation event. This year’s theme was “Sell us the future”. Students researched cutting-edge scientific and technological innovations that have the potential to change our world and delivered their findings through a three-minute “elevator pitch” designed to captivate and persuade their audience.

Pitching the Future in Three Minutes

Each student selected a contemporary issue and investigated an innovative scientific or technological solution currently being developed to address it. They were challenged to present their research in two formats:

・ An eye-catching infographic that summarized the innovation
・ A three-minute, high-impact elevator pitch to “sell” the future

This format required students not only to research thoroughly but also to communicate persuasively and creatively. The presentations were both engaging and informative, leaving the audience impressed with the students’ passion and originality.

A Wide Range of Cutting-Edge Topics

The students explored a diverse range of scientific innovations shaping the future, including:

・ Wearable AI devices
・ Space debris removal technologies
・ Artificial organs
・ Self-healing concrete
・ Edible plastics
・ Carbon capture solutions
・ Water regeneration systems
・ Barley-based pharmaceutical developments
・ Hydrogen fuel cells
・ LiDAR technology
・ 3D bioprinting
・ Seaweed-based water capsules

In addition, each presentation was linked to one of the Nature of Science strands: Scientific Endeavour, Understanding Science, Objectivity of Science, or The Human Face of Science, allowing students to connect their research to broader scientific perspectives.

More Than Just Grades

While students earned excellent grades for their efforts, the most valuable outcome was the rich learning experience they gained. Through this project, they developed not only their scientific literacy but also their critical thinking, communication, and presentation skills. It was an inspiring event that showcased the students’ creativity and curiosity while preparing them for future challenges.
