[Junior High WOW Program] Learning Through Architecture — Exploring the Connection Between Craftsmanship and Society

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School conducted a special session called "Architecture Workshop" as part of the WOW Program. This program aims to let students experience the appeal of “making things” while engaging directly with architecture professionals and to learn about the significance of working in society.

Learning the Depth of Architecture from Professionals

Students visited Rui Sekkeishitsu Co., Ltd. in Osaka City and heard from architects about the joys of architectural design and what the job entails. The lecture highlighted how architecture contributes to society and supports people's lives, and how architects approach their work with thoughtful perspectives and intentions. Through this, students learned that architecture is not just about shaping structures, but rather about "designing connections between people and society."

Workshop: Let’s Build an Earthquake-Resistant Structure

After the lecture, students participated in a group workshop where they were tasked with designing buildings that could withstand earthquakes. Rather than simply focusing on strength, each group was given a unique theme such as “soft,” “firm,” “inviting,” or “relaxing,” and worked to design the shape and structure accordingly.

Students discussed ideas within their teams, used creativity, and finally conducted real shaking tests on their completed buildings. Through the experiments, they realized how challenging it is to create well-balanced and resilient structures, gaining a deeper appreciation for architectural design. After the activity, many shared reflections such as “It was fun to come up with ideas as a team,” and “I learned that the shape of a building has meaning.”

Discovering the Link Between Society and Self Through Architecture

Through this program, students not only enjoyed the process of making things but also experienced how architecture contributes to society and people's daily lives. It was a valuable day for students to express their ideas through creation, collaborate with peers, and think about the meaning of working in society.
