Junior High WOW Program: Experiencing Disaster Relief Drones through AI and Programming
On Tuesday, November 4, our school held a WOW (Wonder of the World) program titled "Disaster Relief Drone Experience through AI and Programming". We welcomed instructors from Edusky Inc., who guided students in learning about the social applications and latest technologies of drones.
Exploring the Potential of Drones in Disaster Situations
In the lecture, students learned about real-life examples of drone use during the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, including assessing disaster zones, delivering supplies, and inspecting infrastructure. The session demonstrated how drones are increasingly used in various fields of society. Students listened intently, reflecting on how technology plays a role in disaster response.
Hands-On Drone Programming Experience
In the practical workshop, students flew actual drones and challenged themselves with programming using Scratch. They wrote their own programs to fly the drones and worked to complete assigned tasks through trial and error. Collaborating with their peers, they experienced both the fun and complexity of programming.
A Message to Future Engineers
The instructors shared the following message:
"Drone technology is still in its early stages and will continue to develop further. We hope you take interest in drones and AI and aim to become future engineers."
Expanding the Joy of Learning — The Aim of the WOW Program
The Junior High WOW Program, short for "Wonder of the World," is our school’s original inquiry-based learning initiative designed to "encounter the wonders of the world and expand the joy of learning." The program is offered as an extracurricular activity to interested students and invites experts from universities, research institutions, and companies to explore topics beyond the regular curriculum.
Through a wide range of themes in science, culture, society, and the arts, students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and take initiative. Emphasis is also placed on giving back to society through their learning. Programs like this disaster-related drone workshop help students experience how learning connects to real-world issues in their communities.
Through encounters with professionals and practical experiences, students deepen their learning as they shape their future paths.
