Guest Speaker Lecture: Pursuing Your Interests Can Become a Tool for Opening New Paths

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Mr. Yu Nagai, CEO of Taktopia Inc., was invited as a guest speaker for the "IM Sogo" class, targeting second-year students of the IM Course at Ritsumeikan Uji High School.

9th Guest Speaker: Haruka Nagai, CEO of Taktopia Inc.

In this lecture, Mr. Nagai shared the path that led him to become CEO of Taktopia Inc. and his motivations for engaging in educational projects. Although he initially worked at a consulting firm before starting his education business, Mr. Nagai had devoted himself to researching the composer Bach during his university and graduate school years. While music and business may seem unrelated, he explained how delving into his field of interest sparked questions about society and led him to where he is today as he pursued answers to those questions.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Nagai conveyed the message that it is perfectly fine to follow your shifting interests rather than maintaining a consistent focus throughout. This message gave encouragement to many students who are currently searching for their path. At the end of his talk, he said:

“Bach invented the ‘way to compose music.’ In terms of societal impact, that invention rivals that of any company or technological breakthrough. At Taktopia, we aim to be the ‘Bach of learning’—professionals who not only create content but also design the learning environment.”

What Students Learned and Reflected On

Learning how Mr. Nagai confronted challenges gave students important insights into how they might carve out their own future paths:

  • “Hearing how his passion for research led to new questions and eventually his current work made me want to take on things I’m currently interested in.”
  • “I was impressed by how he overcame business continuity challenges during COVID without changing his core values—just adapting his methods. That’s something I can learn from when I face obstacles.”

What is IM Sogo?

In the IM Course, all students study abroad for one year between their first and second years. Upon returning, they participate in a weekly class called "IM Sogo," where they reflect on their experiences and think deeply about their future paths and personal aspirations. The second semester's theme is:

“Expand Your Horizons”

This theme encourages students to nurture their aspirations through new encounters and experiences. As part of this initiative, graduates of the IM Course and professionals from various fields are invited as guest speakers to help students find inspiration for their future.
