High School Students Perform Kyogen, a Traditional Japanese Performing Art

We would like to introduce you to the activities of third-year high school SA (Scholar Athlete & Artist) students Tatsumasa Shigeyama and Toramasa Shigeyama. They appeared at the 8th Kashizuki-no-Kai held at the Kongo Noh Theatre on August 11, with Tatsumasa Shigeyama playing the role of the master in "Tsukeko" and Toramasa Shigeyama playing the role of Tarokaja in "Bunzumo".

Here are their impressions.

>>Tatsumasa Shigeyama.

This time, "Tsukeko" was new and different from the roles I had played before. I would like to continue to watch my father (Shigeyama Sengoro) and others who are active in Tokyo to learn how to pronounce Kyogen.

>>Toramasa Shigeyama.

This "Bunzumo" was a longer kyogen than the others and had more dialogue than usual, which made me anxious, but I am glad it ended well. I am going to look at what I am lacking by watching my father's (Sengoro Shigeyama) and uncle's (Shigeru Shigeyama) kyogen plays.

The upcoming "8th Shigeyama Kyogenkai Autumn, the bicentennial of the death of Kyuzo Shigeyama VIII" will be held on September 23 (national holiday) at the Kongo Noh Theater. In addition to Tatsumasa Shigeyama and Toramasa Shigeyama, our second-year junior high school SA students Takamasa Shigeyama and Yoshikazu Shigeyama will also perform on that stage.

Please look forward to the activities of our SA students.
