【Report】Prof. Mikio NISHIZAWA (the leader of the Asia-Japan Research Program) talked at the Jamu Conference in Indonesia!

On September 13, 2023, Dewan Jamu (i.e., Jamu Conference) was held at Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Mr. Sandiago Uno, who is the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy in Indonesia, attended this Conference and did an opening speech.

Professor Dr. Mikio Nishizawa (College of Life Sciences) was invited as a keynote speaker and talked about "Research on Traditional Medicine in Japan and Indonesia." He explained the findings obtained during the research on the crude drugs of traditional Japanese medicine, Kampo medicine, such as Cnidium officinale rhizomes (Senkyu), Polygonum multiflorum roots (Kashu), and the fruit of Momordica charantia (bitter melon). The bitter melon fruit is also known as a crude drug of traditional Indonesian medicine, Jamu. He mentioned that the methods and findings in the research on Kampo medicine may be applied to Jamu research.

This Jamu Conference will develop the research on the medicinal plants and crude drugs of Jamu and the appropriate use of Jamu in the future.
