【Report】Members of Asia-Japan Research Program, Profs. Nishizawa and Arata, talked at the Joint Seminar in Indonesia organized by ASEAN HRD Secretariat

On September 11, 2023, Special Seminar on Food Analysis "Prospective Foods for Well-being in Indonesia and Japan" in Partnership with IPB University 2023 was held in Dramaga Campus of IPB University in Bogor, Indonesia. This Special Seminar was organized by three universities (IPB University, Ritsumeikan University, and Brawijaya University) and the Project for Human Resource Development (HRD) under the ASEAN Secretariat. This is one of the activities of the Project for HRD in Food-related Areas through Partnership with Universities in ASEAN Region. As other projects by HRD, food analysis courses were held in IPB University, Brawijaya University, and other universities in ASEAN.

As Part I "Indonesian and Japanese Functional Substances/Food Research," Prof. Dr. Mikio Nishizawa (College of Life Sciences, Ritsumeikan University) talked on "Research on Traditional Medicine and Functional Foods" followed by the talks by Dr. Dase Hunaefi (Department of Food Science and Technology, IPB University) and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sasmito Djati (Brawijaya University, Malang, Indonesia), who is a collaborator with Ritsumeikan University for a long time.

As Part II "Activities/Research on Social Implementation," Prof. Dr. Mariko Arata (College of Gastronomy Management, Ritsumeikan University) talked on "Food Culture and Well-being – A Comparison between Japan and Indonesia." Finally, Dr. Mari Maeda-Yamamoto (Executive Researcher, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, Japan) gave a talk on "Functional Labeling System and New Food Development for Well-being Improvement in Japan."

Many people gathered at the hall of IPB University, and the audience asked many questions to the speakers. This special seminar will facilitate the interaction of researchers between Indonesia and Japan and strengthen the collaboration among the universities.
