About

Overview

The Graduate School of Language Education and Information Science (LEIS) was established in April 2003 as an independent graduate school offering master's degree courses with the aim of nurturing highly-trained professionals in three areas: second language education, various fields of linguistics and studies of communication and expression. From 2024, the program will evolve to offer three new courses: a Japanese language education course, an English language education course, and a course in linguistics and studies of communication and expression.

LEIS aims to train internationally competent language education practitioners. To achieve this, practical training is offered to students at various affiliated educational institutions both in Japan and overseas. In addition, a TESOL certificate can be earned at a partner university overseas. In these ways, the educational content that LEIS offers is strong, and through these chances students can improve their practical teaching skills. LEIS has also contributed to local communities through practical educational activities aimed at promoting multicultural co-existence. Together, the courses on offer have produced many Japanese and English teachers working at universities, vocational colleges and Japanese schools, as well as English teachers working at junior and senior high schools. Through the expertise developed at LEIS, these individuals are all able to use their practical skills to deliver high-quality lessons.

A wide variety of distinctive research is conducted in LEIS in bilingualism, linguistics and language education, teacher education, cooperative learning and intercultural communication, among others. After graduating from LEIS, an increasing number of students have progressed to doctoral programs in the Graduate School of Letters at Ritsumeikan University or other universities with the aim of further developing their research skills. Some have also gone onto to teaching at universities as specialists in the fields of linguistics and language education.
