Sustainable Organic Synthesis toward Drug Development

Pharmaceutical products consist of organic molecules and have complex skeleton and various functional groups. Therefore, the organic synthesis is essential for drug discovery and improvement of medicinal properties. Current advances in calculation technology have led to an era in which we can theoretically design desirable drugs, which indicates organic synthesis will play an active role in drug development. To approach the drug synthesis, organic chemists should develop an environmentally benign methodology without harm to human body. Our group have always pursued the future sustainability and usefulness of fine organic synthesis, while also passing down the knowledge and skills of organic synthesis needed in drug discovery. We have especially focused on the new synthetic methods toward drug discovery, such as bond formations of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms in pharmaceutical compounds as well as introduction of fluorine atom into organic molecules to increase the medial efficacy.
