AEDs are installed on all Ritsumeikan University campuses. They are available for immediate use in the event of an emergency. In addition, since there is a high risk of arrhythmia during sports activities, AEDs are also installed on the Haradani and Hiragino Fields. As shown in the AED installation maps below, units have been placed throughout the campuses so that one can be acquired within 4 minutes no matter where on campus an emergency occurs.

What is an AED?

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that allows anyone, even those with no medical expertise, to save the life of a person experiencing “ventricular fibrillation,” which is an arrhythmia just before cardiac death. Two electrodes are attached to the chest of the unconscious person, and if the machine determines that it is necessary, an electric shock is administered by operating the device according to the AED’s voice instructions, ending ventricular fibrillation and restoring a normal heartbeat.

Lifesaving Training

Several times a year, we hold lifesaving training on each campus in cooperation with the fire department, which includes instruction on how to operate an AED. For this academic year’s training schedule, please contact the Medical Service Center.
