Introduction to Institute for Teaching and Learning

Purpose

The Institute for Teaching and Learning provides support for improving the quality of education and student learning, in coordination with the University, Colleges, Graduate Schools, and academic institutions, in order to preserve the University’s founding principles and educational ideals, and for the purpose of cultivating talent and attaining the educational objectives of Colleges, Graduate Schools and academic institutions.

Definition of FD in our University

The FD activities of Ritsumeikan University are defined as follows: their purpose is to realize the ideals and educational goals set forth by Colleges, Graduate Schools, and other academic institutions, based on the founding spirit and educational ideals. In order to achieve this, FD activities promote systematic research and training by faculty members in collaboration with staff members and with the participation of students regarding the appropriateness of the arrangement, content, methods, teaching materials, evaluation, etc. for the curricula and individual classes. Their validity and effectiveness are continuously reviewed and improved.

Mission Statement of Center of Teaching and Learning

In order to contribute to the realization of the Institute objective, the Center of Teaching and Learning does: -Support Ritsumeikan University’s teaching and learning policy formation and process of continuous evaluation, verification, and improvement; -Support the initiative for the improvement of education of Colleges and Graduate Schools, and learning improvement of students; -Supporting the Center’s original education and learning, support for instructors and students, and conduct necessary investigations and researches based on University’s policy.

Peer Education

Initiative of Peer Education

Ritsumeikan University provides peer education, which is a system where diverse students can learn and grow together, within and/or without the regular curriculum.

Peer Education is conducted in a diverse field including the regular curriculum, first-year-education, library, and job-hunting support. It also provides “Peer Support Theory” as a Liberal Arts Courses for students whom engages in Peer Education.

Educational Supporter (ES)

Educational Supporter (ES) is undergraduate students who provide support to instructors and students. By assisting both instructors and students with questioners from students and/or creating materials, ES plays a part in creating more effective learning effect. Additionally, such opportunities become an opportunity where ES can obtain more specialty in an educational and a broad sense. Moreover, ES has also a role as a monitor for the betterment of the classes, and thus contributing to the class betterment.

ES system was introduced in 2004 and more than 700 students has been experiencing ES every year.
