International Institute of Language and Culture Studies

More than 20 years of history of International Institute of Language and Culture Studies since its founding in 1989 can be said to have engraved in it the historic changes in the world that occurred during the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, as well as the collapse of a variety of assumptions that in the past had been taken for granted. The Institute desires to pursue the proposition of considering a "cooperativity" that is suited to the new era, from the perspective of language and culture. It utilizes symposiums, publications, and other such means to develop and transmit internationally research projects on a large number of issues, such as rethinking of the nation-state, critique of globalization, observations on gender formation, tracking immigrants as a diaspora, the problem of visuality in Japanese studies, the epidemic of confusion and social violence caused by global financial capitalism that makes itself evident as inconsistencies in the new social structure, and the worldwide transformation of forms of expression.
