Development Policy for Recipients of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Fellowships for Young Researchers (PD, etc.) Hired by Ritsumeikan University
In our Mid-term Research Advancement Plan, which aims to boost our research capabilities, Ritsumeikan University is providing support tailored to the career stages of researchers—from early-career researchers (including doctoral candidates) to core researchers—based on the concept of “seamless opportunities for emergent human resources to thrive” from elementary and secondary education through to the doctoral level and beyond. We place particular emphasis on initiatives to enhance the research capabilities of early-career researchers and to develop a diverse array of career paths for them.
In AY2023, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) launched the “Program to Support the Employment of Young Researchers for the Enhancement of Research Environments” to enable early-career researchers who had not previously had employment relationships with their host institutions to be employed by them as Postdoctoral (PD) Research Fellows, Restart Postdoctoral (RPD) Research Fellows, or Cross-border Postdoctoral (CPD) Fellows (“JSPS PD Fellows, etc.,” hereinafter).
In addition to commencing the direct employment of JSPS PD Fellows, etc., the University will implement the following four unique support initiatives.
1. Development of globally competitive researchers
We will provide opportunities for overseas training and joint research with overseas institutions in order to develop researchers who can succeed in the global arena. We also plan to offer the Program for Overseas Travel Support, which helps cover travel expenses to international conferences and other meetings, and the International Collaborative Research Promotion Program, which provides support for researchers conducting international joint research with overseas universities.
2. Development of researchers who can procure research funding and conduct research on their own accord
We plan to offer programs such as the “Support Seminar for Acquiring Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI)” and the “Brush-up Program for KAKENHI Research Plan” to help researchers obtain research funds, as well as the “Support Program for Submission and Review Fees” to assist with their journal article submissions.
3. Development of researchers with both theoretical and practical skills
In order to cultivate the basic educational competencies that early-career researchers will need as university faculty members and help them develop their career paths, we will provide training opportunities using the faculty development (FD) program for new faculty members implemented by the Institute for Teaching and Learning at Ritsumeikan University.
4. Development policy for female researchers
From the standpoint of promoting diversity and inclusion, we will provide support for female researchers. We will implement support for female researchers so they can work with peace of mind, including career path development support for them, support for the initial phase of research, and research support related to life events. Ritsumeikan University will thereby continue to create an environment in which early-career researchers can tackle challenges with vigor, and we will make further efforts to realize our goal of becoming a next-generation research-intensive university.
