History of the Campus Asia Program

2003 The "Japan-South Korea Joint Course," an international exchange based seminar class that became the predecessor of the Campus Asia Program, starts between the Institute of Japanese Studies, Graduate School of Dongseo University in South Korea, and the Graduate School of Letters, Ritsumeikan University.
2006 The Japanese Language Department of the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies joins the "Japan-South Korea Joint Course" forming the "Japan-South Korea-China Joint Course," a cooperative class spanning three countries. Building on the experiences and results of this course, the Campus Asia Program is launched.
2011 The program is selected by MEXT as part of the Inter-University Exchange Project (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
With the theme of “fostering the next generation of East Asian humanities leaders”, Ritsumeikan University College of Letters is selected by MEXT as part of its 2011 Inter-University Exchange Project (Type A-1) (Re-Inventing Japan Project). Of the 10 universities selected by MEXT, Ritsumeikan was the only private university and the only university offering a four-year undergraduate program.
2012 The Campus Asia Pilot Program is launched. Full-scale student education begins.
2013 The program achieves the highest rating of S in the interim evaluation of MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project (first round) (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
The "Joint Campus," in which the 30 Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean pilot students travel and study together in the three countries begins.
2015 The program achieves the highest rating of S in the post evaluation of MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project (first round) (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
Campus Asia Pilot Program students graduate.
2016 The program is selected by MEXT as part of the second round of the Inter-University Exchange Project (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
The Campus Asia Pilot Program is further developed and a permanent Campus Asia Program is launched. The new program is innovative in that it improves the quantity of student exchange and the quality of education and research by expanding exchange between South Korea, Japan and China and sharing academic research on the effects of education based on an unprecedented "two-country, two time study abroad" Joint Campus.
2018 The program achieves the highest rating of S in the interim evaluation of MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project (second round) (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
2019 First group of Campus Asia Program students graduate. Graduates of the Campus Asia Program have capitalized on their ability to use the three program languages, understand those from other countries, coordinate multicultural activities, to go on to graduate school or enter various international companies.
2020 Achieved the highest rating of S in the post evaluation of MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project (second round) (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
2021 The program is selected by MEXT as part of the third round of the Inter-University Exchange Project (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
2022 In addition to the three existing partner universities, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) is invited to join the consortium to launch the new Campus Asia Program based on a three-course system.
2023 The program achieves A in the interim evaluation of MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project(third round) (Re-Inventing Japan Project).
