On December 8, 2023, Ritsumeikan University's Master's Program in Economic Development (MPED) students visited Shimadzu Corporation's headquarters in Kyoto. The event highlighted Shimadzu's historical contributions to science and technology since its founding in 1875, focusing on their evolution into a leader in analytical and measuring instruments. Staff presentations emphasized the company's commitment to environmental sustainability, including climate change initiatives, recycling efforts, and adherence to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A tour of the Shimadzu Science Plaza offered a practical look at their latest technologies, especially in medical systems, such as advanced X-ray systems and other medical equipment. The study trip provided a multifaceted learning experience, combining economic theory, corporate strategy, and social impact, with a focus on sustainable development and environmental technologies. Supported by JICA, the trip connected theoretical knowledge on technology policies with practical insights into research and manufacturing. It offered a comprehensive view of private sector contributions to technology advancement and societal well-being, especially relevant for students with backgrounds in public policy in developing countries.
