  • 01Educational Policy and Objectives for Human Resource Development

    Master's Program

    Educational Policy
    The Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering aims to foster researchers and highly-skilled engineers(specialists) with broad perspectives and advanced skills who can find social challenges and solve them innovative ways through cutting-edge information science technology and its applied fields’ education and research. In order to realize both the welfare of human beings and peace, we pursue internationally prominent education and research, and contribute to the creation of affluent society based on harmony between human beings and nature.

    Objectives for Human Resource Development
    The Master's Program aims at fostering researchers and specialists who are ready to tackle and solve issues pertaining to today's information society at the local and global levels. Students will gain competencies in analyzing and solving problems, communicative proficiency in Japanese and in English, understanding of developments in theories and cutting-edge technologies in information processing, network construction and system architecture, media technology, technologies applied to human life and intelligence, and ethics in science and technology.

    02Educational Goal and Diploma Policy

    Master's Program

    To achieve our objectives for human resource development of the Master's Program, we provide instruction and supervision to lead students to acquire the competence listed below. A Master's degree is conferred upon those who have successfully completed credits required by the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, have passed the thesis examination according to the evaluation criteria of the Master's Program, and have submitted the final version of the thesis.

    (a) They should possess specific knowledge and research capabilities in natural sciences and in their specialized field.
    (b) They should possess analytical writing, presentation and communication skills.
    (c) They should possess the ability to frame problems and formulate solutions in their fields in order to become conscientious researchers or engineers who can solve problems in advanced information society.
    (d) They should possess the global perspective and cross-cultural understanding in order to work effectively at the international level.

    Criteria for Evaluation of Master's thesis
    The thesis in Master's program must be approved that students who are applying for degree have shown the research ability in their research field and fundamental knowledge for that. Also, the Master's thesis must be the appropriate level for the Master's degree.
    a) Originality of the Thesis
    b) Academic Significance of the Subject of Research
    c) Appropriateness of the Research Method
    d) Appropriateness of Reference about Relevancies and Differences with Previous Studies
    e) Logicality and Validity of Analysis for the Result of Research
    f) Validity of the Achievement of Research for the Subject of Research
    g) Integrity of the Thesis

    Research supervision plan
    Regarding the research supervision in Master's and Doctoral programs, the contents, the plans, etc. are supposed to be informed the students beforehand. The supervisor should have interviews with their students individually who belong to either Masterʼs program or Doctoral program to draw up their research plans. The formulated research plan should be informed the student by the supervisor. After both the supervisor and the student agree on it, the supervisor proceeds with the research supervision according to it.The plan for the student in Masterʼs program is drawn up and confirmed in anticipation of the completion of Masterʼs program after enrollment. The one for the student in Doctoral program is revised and confirmed annually, at the beginning of each academic year (September for students enrolled in September).

    03Curriculum Policy

    Master's Program

    In the Master’s Program, based on the educational goal, information processing, formulating network and system, in point of specialized area, information media and person, there are subject areas that are 'Common Subjects', 'Special Major Subjects' and 'Research Subjects'. Studying these subjects continually and in comprehensive manner, the curriculum is organized for students to systematically gain firm knowledge and research method and thus achieve the educational goal. The following specifies the objectives of each subject area corresponding to the educational goals.

    • (a) 'Common Subjects' and 'Special Major Subjects' are selected for students to be able to acquire firm knowledge and abilities to carry out research in the specialized area. In 'Common Subjects' students acquire knowledge concerning natural science, technology management and intellectual property management, etc. In 'Special Major Subjects' students acquire firm knowledge and abilities to carry out research in the specialized area.
    • (b) 'Special Research Subjects' are selected for students to be able to acquire improve presentation skill and communication skill. 'Special Research Subjects' are small group seminars where students explain the research contents through making presentations.
    • (c) In 'Special Research Subjects' students develop problem setting and solving abilities in the specialized area in order to acquire the abilities and skills needed for problem setting and solving with awareness of the responsibilities of researchers.
    • (d) In 'Common Subjects' and 'Special Major Subjects' students discuss in groups and deliver presentations in order to acquire the global perspective and cross-cultural understanding in order to work effectively at the international level.

    04Admission Policy

    Master's Program

    In the light of our mission stated above, the Master's Program welcomes students with the following qualities.

    • (a) Individuals who have acquired the fundamental academic abilities required in research activities at the post-graduate level.
    • (b) Individuals who are able to pursue research based on their research proposals.
    • (c) Individuals who have ethical attitudes and steadfast motivation to develop creativity in identifying, analyzing, and solving problems.
    • (d) Individuals who are determined to publicize their opinions, ideas, and research findings at a national and international level.

    Doctoral Program

    Educational Policy

    Objectives for Human Resource Development
    The Doctoral Program fosters researchers and specialists who can function at the forefront of various domains in order to solve, with creative and innovative approaches, important and critical issues of society. Acquired in the program are understanding of theoretical and technological advances in information technology, knowledge and attitudes in research ethics, creativity in identifying, analyzing, and solve problems, and skills in pursuing research activities and those in effective communication.

    To achieve our objectives for human resource development of the Doctoral Program, we provide instruction and supervision to lead students to acquire the competence listed below. A Doctoral degree is conferred upon those who have successfully completed credits required by the Graudate School of Information Science and Engineering, have passed examination of their dissertation according to the evaluation criteria of the Doctoral Program, and have submitted the final version of the dissertations.

    (a) They should possess accurate and deep knowledge and high research ethics in natural sciences and in their specialized field.
    (b) They should possess employing creativity in identifying problems, professional abilities in analyzing and solving problems.
    (c) They should possess competencies in effectively conducting their unique research.
    (d) They should possess the research and communication skills that are necessary to present their findings in and out of Japan and to interact with front-runners in research and technology in the world.

    Criteria for Evaluation of Doctoral Dissertation
    The dissertation in Doctoral program must be approved that students who are applying for degree have shown the technical research ability and the rich knowledge for that to attain necessity of becoming researchers in their fields and highly specialized craftsman. Also, the Doctoral dissertation must be the appropriate level for the Doctoral degree.

By studying these subjects continually and in comprehensive manner, the curriculum is organized for students to achieve the educational goal. The following specifies the objectives of each subject area corresponding to the educational goals.

    • (a) In 'Special Research Subjects' which are based on seminars, students perform their researches in their specialized field in order to acquire accurate and deep understanding and high research ethics in natural sciences and in their specialized field.
    • (b) In 'Special Research Subjects' students plan their own researches in order to aquire employing creativity in identifying problems, professional abilities in analyzing and solving problems.
    • (c) In 'Special Research Subjects' students bring forward their own projects in a planned way in order to acquire competencies in effectively conducting their unique research. Also in 'Seminar and Field Works Subjects' students perform their researches in corporation with researchers at companies, universities and research institutes in and out of Japan.
    • (d) Students present the research results obtained in 'Special Research Subjects' in and outside of the university and to interact with researchers and engineers from abroad in order to acquire the research and communication skills that are necessary to present their findings in and out of Japan and to interact with front-runners in research and technology in the world. Also in 'Seminar and Field Works Subjects' students perform their projects in corporation with researchers and engineers outside Japan.

    04Admission Policy

    Doctoral Program

    In the light of our mission stated above, the Doctoral Program welcomes students with the following qualities.

    • (a) Individuals who can advance their research autonomously, building on their research experience prior to entering the Doctoral Program.
    • (b) Individuals who can act as central and leading figures in organizing and implementing research projects.
    • (c) Individuals who have deep-seated motivation to develop creativity in identifying problems, comprehensive and professional competencies in analyzing and solving those problems, abilities for research management, and their ethical integrity toward research.
    • (d) Individuals who are determined to publicize their opinions, ideas, and research findings at a national and international level and to interact with researchers and professionals with various backgrounds.
