Profile
I graduated from the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at the graduate school of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After working for Fujitsu Ltd. and then the Software Engineering Research Laboratory at the University of Hawaii, I took a post at Ritsumeikan University in 1998. For one year from September 2005, I worked at the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition at the University of California, San Diego as a visiting scholar, and for five years from 2007, served as the leader of the Web Technology Group for the Global COE Program, “Digital Humanities Center for Japanese Arts and Cultures.” I have served as a professor at the College of Policy Science and the Graduate School of Policy Science since 2008.

educational interests
Before joining Ritsumeikan University, I was involved in research on AI that understands natural language and learns from conversations with humans. Through the research, I realized that to understand better the difference in the learning process between AI and humans, it is necessary to deeply understand human society and culture in terms of the humanities and social sciences, combined with the theoretical and quantitative approaches used in natural sciences. I joined the College of Policy Science and Graduate School of Policy Science, pursuing interdisciplinary studies integrating the humanities and natural science. At Ritsumeikan University, I am involved in research in learning science and cognitive science to understand humans and society better. I am particularly interested in implementing the metaverse and game-based platforms for collaborative learning, situated learning, and cross-cultural understanding. Join us in interdisciplinary research that crosses the boundary between the humanities and natural sciences.

I look forward to working with you to deepen understanding of individuals, organizations and communities across the boundary between the humanities and natural sciences, and to explore technologies and methodologies to broaden the possibilities of such individuals, organizations and communities through on-site practical learning.
