Ritsumeikan Tied for First Place Among Private Universities in Japan on the THE Impact Rankings 2024 and Ranked First for SDG 1 (No Poverty) for the Second Consecutive Year
In the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, which were released on June 12 by the British higher education journal Times Higher Education (THE), Ritsumeikan University placed 201-300 overall, earning a tie for first place among private Japanese universities in Japan.
In addition to the overall ranking, the THE Impact Rankings also rank universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ritsumeikan ranked first in Japan (15th in the world) for SDG 1 (No poverty) for the second consecutive year, and it ranked within the top 100 in the world for all five goals for which it applied, including fifth in Japan (90th in the world) for SDG 2 (Zero hunger), third in Japan (81st in the world) for SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), fourth in Japan (63rd in the world) for SDG 14 (Life below water), and fourth in Japan (86th in the world) for SDG 15 (Life on land).
The THE Impact Rankings assess universities in terms of how their research and social outreach activities contribute to the 17 SDGs adopted by the United Nations and give each university a score and a ranking. Universities can apply for the goals that match their respective strengths, and in 2024, a total of 2,152 universities applied (+561 year-on-year), including 74 Japanese universities.
Going forward, Ritsumeikan University will continue to pursue a wide range of education and research initiatives to help achieve the SDGs.
