Outline of collaborative research

In September 2022, Ritsumeikan University’s team for this collaborative research and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of South Australia formalized an exchange agreement. This partnership aims to investigate the global impacts of post-COVID-19 human mobilities and the digital revolution. A commemorative international research conference was held in December 2022, where plans for a co-authored book were solidified.

In February 2023, two members of the Ritsumeikan team visited Adelaide to discuss the direction of the collaborative research and the specifics of the planned publication. Their visit also included research on the relationships between tourism mobilities and digital technology in Australia. In March 2023, two researchers from the University of South Australia visited Japan for an international conference.

Throughout 2023, both teams held several Zoom discussions to advance the project, eventually completing a book proposal. In February 2024, two Ritsumeikan researchers made a follow-up visit to Adelaide to finalize details for the book, while continuing their research on tourism mobilities and digital technology. In March 2024, the University of South Australia team returned to Japan for another international conference. This ongoing collaboration is focused on producing a joint publication and deepening research into post-pandemic social changes.

Future prospects/aspiration

Global mobilities are now deeply intertwined with digital technology. The nature of mobilities ought to be called “algorithmic mobilities."

Our collaborative research team has developed critical researches on such algorithmic mobilities profoundly. Therefore, Ritsumeikan University has begun to be recognized as one of the global centers for mobilities studies including tourism studies. Algorithmic mobilities research makes it possible to have transdisciplinary discussions not only in Natural Sciences but also in Humanities and Social Sciences across campuses. Our team would like to continue to promote this type of transdisciplinary research and generate a lot of research typhoons!
