JH WOW: Tokushima Environmental Study Tour

The WOW Program "Tokushima Environmental Study Tour" was held for two days  from March 30, 2023 (Thursday).
The participants visited Kamikatsu-cho, Tokushima Prefecture, the first town in Japan to declare a "zero-waste" policy, and stayed at HOTEL WHY, a zero-waste center, to learn about the town's efforts.
HOTEL WHY itself is made of scrap wood and upcycled materials, and currently 80% of the garbage generated in Kamikatsu-cho is recycled.

At the reception desk, we started by thinking about the amount of soap we would use for one night and cutting it up ourselves. We also think about the amount of tea we will drink during the stay and tell them at the beginning and get only the amount of tea leaves we need. They also learned that although garbage is usually divided into three types at school, "burnable," "non-burnable," and "plastic bottles/cans," it can actually be divided into many more types, and that the amount of recyclable materials can be increased if each of us just gets creative and discards them. The students seemed to be inspired by the efforts of Kamikatsu-cho, where people are aware of how to live a garbage-free life, rather than how to dispose of garbage. On the final day, students sorted their own garbage into 45 final categories, and put the food scraps into a compost bin to return them to the soil.

Before leaving, we went to "Ibi Uzushio Village" for a beach cleanup. All the students were surprised and dismayed at the amount of plastic trash. It was a program to think carefully about what we should do to preserve our rich natural environment for the future.

Some students commented that they would like to think about how to expand on what they learned this time when they go back to school. Some said that they would like to work to make eco-activities a part of the youth culture, which is "cool! and that we should work to make eco-activities a part of the youth culture. We hope that this will actually lead to such activities in Ritsumeikan Uji!
