【WOW Program】Kabuki Appreciation Class at Minamiza Theater
[WOW Program] Kabuki Experience at Minamiza Theater, Kyoto
On Saturday, May 17, as part of the WOW program, students attended a special Kabuki performance at the historic Minamiza Theater in Kyoto.
The featured play was Aioi Jishi (The Twin Lions), a visually stunning piece that captivated students with its elegant movements and powerful performances.
Before entering the theater, the students gathered in front of the statue of Izumo no Okuni—known as the founder of Kabuki—where they received a lecture on the history and development of Kabuki. The informative talk helped students gain a deeper understanding of the traditional art form's origins and evolution over time.
Prior to the main performance, a pre-show explanation was given by rakugo storyteller Katsura Danjiro, along with actors Kataoka Chizu and Kamimura Kichitaro. Their engaging insights into the storyline and highlights of the performance made it easier for first-time viewers to follow and enjoy the experience. One memorable moment was when an audience member was invited onstage to try out onnagata (female role) movements—and that student happened to be from our school!
During the performance of Aioi Jishi, the scene featuring the red and white lion heads was especially powerful, and the students were visibly impressed by the intensity and energy of the actors’ dancing.
This opportunity to engage directly with traditional Japanese culture was an invaluable experience for the students. It offered a sense of wonder and learning that goes beyond the classroom, making it a truly meaningful day that deepened their appreciation for Japanese performing arts.
