An Alumni Bridge of Friendship: Ritsumeikan Uji Welcomes Junior High Students from Papua New Guinea
– A Day of Heartfelt Cultural Exchange Between Students from Papua New Guinea and Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School –
On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School experienced a heartwarming moment of international exchange. Six elementary and junior high school students and one teacher from Papua New Guinea visited the school and took part in various cultural exchange activities with members of the school’s Junior High International Committee.
The person who made this special encounter possible was Mr. Shota Uchiyama, a graduate of Ritsumeikan Uji. Currently serving in Papua New Guinea as a member of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JICA), Mr. Uchiyama accompanied the students to Japan to participate in the Papua New Guinea National Day at Expo Osaka. As part of their Japan trip, he proposed a visit to his alma mater, which led to this meaningful exchange.
A Learning Experience Inspired by an Alumnus
“I want my students to feel the same inspiration I experienced through international exchange when I was in junior high school.” With this wish in mind, Mr. Uchiyama reached out to his former school, and with the warm support of both staff and current students, this exchange came to life. It was a beautiful example of the “circle of learning” unique to Ritsumeikan Uji—where the experiences of alumni connect with current students and continue to shape the future.
A Heart-to-Heart Exchange Beyond Borders
The day began with a shared lunch, followed by a rich program of activities including a tea ceremony, traditional Japanese games such as kendama and koma, calligraphy, science experiments, a school tour, and a game of tag in the gymnasium. Laughter and applause naturally filled the air as students from both countries connected beyond language and cultural differences.
A highlight of the day was the traditional dance performed by the Papua New Guinean students in cultural attire. With its vibrant energy and powerful presence, the dance transformed the atmosphere and left a lasting impression on everyone. The sight of students respectfully sharing cultures, dancing face-to-face, and laughing together was a moving glimpse into a world where people live in harmony.
Memories and Moments That Shape the Future
The friendships and discoveries formed on this day will not only remain cherished memories but will likely become seeds that influence future learning and life paths. Above all, the fact that this exchange was initiated by a graduate offered the students a meaningful opportunity to reflect on what it truly means to “connect.”
Graduates and current students, Japan and the world, culture and everyday life—this day bridged them all, creating something truly irreplaceable. Ritsumeikan Uji will continue to nurture global perspectives and kind hearts through strong bonds with our alumni and meaningful international experiences.
