The Spirit of Unity at Ritsumeikan Uji Shown Through High School Baseball Support

On July 25, Ritsumeikan Uji High School took on the powerhouse Kyoto International High School, last summer’s national champions, in the Kyoto Prefectural High School Baseball Tournament. The third-base side stands at Wakasa Stadium were filled with the passionate support of students, faculty, and families from Ritsumeikan Uji.

Over 400 students gathered in the stands that day. In addition to the brass band and cheerleading squad, members of various athletic clubs—who normally devote themselves to rigorous practice—paused their training to join the cheering section. Among the supporters were third-year students cheering on their classmates, students who had just returned from studying abroad in Canada, and even junior high students, creating a diverse crowd transcending grades and ages. Many parents and faculty also came to cheer, bringing the total number of supporters in the stands to over 600. For those who couldn’t attend in person, a public viewing was quickly organized on campus. The drama club graciously offered up their reserved auditorium, where students gathered to watch the intense game on the big screen and cheer on their teammates remotely.

Throughout the game, the cheering section responded to every pitch and play with heartfelt applause. They roared at each hit, admired the precision of bunts, and were moved by the fierce determination of players sliding into first base. Although the match ended in a narrow defeat, the players’ all-out performance and the heartfelt support from their peers forged a powerful sense of unity in the stands.

On this day, baseball brought together players and supporters, fostering mutual respect and deep connection. When sports culture becomes an integral part of school culture and unites people, it creates an invaluable shared experience. This day reminded us of the joy of being part of a community and the strength of the bonds we share at Ritsumeikan Uji.
